I visited the prestigious ESMOD Berlin International University of Art for Fashion last week with a delegation of industry insiders from all over Africa. I enjoy meeting design students and their lecturers because emerging designers are the future of fashion. Visiting ESMOD in particular was very exciting. The institution has yielded respected alumni such as Suzy Menkes, Nina Garcia and creative directors of various fashion houses like Balmain.
Despite the high level of quality they were not under pressure to set up their own labels right away. They were focused more on honing their craft, and developing their skills for another few years before. Sportswear was prominent in a few collections. Activewear elements like drawstrings, performance fabrics, and American football was an inspiration for one particular student who worked with 3D printing technology.
Architecture was a source of design influence, with sporty and multi-cultural elements evident in many of the collections. There s incredible talent there and I for on can’t wait to see these students’ careers take off. you can’t not be optimistic about the future of fashion.
